Everyone seems to know about all of the beautiful and some of the dangerous wildlife that lives in our oceans or in our case the Gulf of Mexico. There are 49 types of sharks around the tip of the Florida peninsula. The most feared is the Bull Shark and they are in abundance. We also have stingrays who tend to keep to themselves and are very beautiful to watch as they tend to swim within a foot or two of the shore. Rays also like to sleep just under the sand and do tend to get a little upset when stepped on. Thats why we do the “stingray shuffle” when entering the water.
Snakes of course are here but most are harmless and actually are beneficial to the environment. Rattlesnakes and Cottonmouths (water moccasin) - NO. Just don’t walk on your lawn without shoes. They can sense you and wish to scurry away. Everyone seems to hate snakes and my theory on that goes back to our childhood religious backgrounds.
If there is a pond or a lake filled with water the general rule is “DO NOT GO IN”. Alligators. They are fast and they are around but unless it’s mating season or momma is watching out for the little ones, they basically stay away. If you feed them, they will come. DO NOT FEED ANYTHING.
Little known wildlife here in Southwest Florida is the Florida panther. It’s endangered and the numbers have dwindled to the hundreds. Their greatest enemy is the car.
We have bobcats. They are elusive but do tend to appear. Same thing with the Florida black bear. Everyone is looking for food in the habitat they use to call their own.
The last interesting of the wildlife is deer. They are beautiful and walk the golf courses in the early morning or late evening.
This is just a little information about the types of neighbors that cohabitate with us. Just a thought, there really isn’t much in the Arctic Circle but the farther you travel south the more friends you make along the way.
